Expression lines such as crow’s feet and frown lines on the forehead and between the brows are caused by overactive muscle movements repeatedly creasing the skin.

Treatment of these wrinkles involves the use of a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium (Botox). A minute amount of the protein is injected into selected muscles, temporarily reducing the contractions that caused the persistent frown lines.

The treatment takes ten to twenty minutes and discomfort is minimal as very fine needles are used. No recovery time is involved and results are usually noticed within three to four days. The upper third of the face is where best treatment results are obtained: the ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes, the wrinkles and frown lines between the brows and on the forehead.

The skin around the treated area will look smoother and less wrinkled and many patients also report feeling more relaxed as frowning (conscious and unconscious) reduces.

The results of such treatment are not permanent; it is usual to repeat the treatment every three to four months to maintain and build upon the original results.
