If you have just had dermal fillers, or you are considering treatment for the first time, one of the most common questions we hear at Kat & Co is: how long does it take for dermal fillers to settle? The honest answer is that it varies depending on the area treated and the type of filler used, but most patients see their final results somewhere between two and four weeks after their appointment.
At our clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham, we always take time to set realistic expectations before any treatment. Understanding the settling process helps you feel confident in those early days, even when results look a little uneven or swollen.
In the first hour or two after your treatment, you will likely notice some swelling, redness and possibly mild bruising around the injection sites. This is completely normal and is simply your body responding to the tiny injections. Some patients also experience firmness or lumpiness in the treated area as the filler sits beneath the skin before it has had a chance to integrate fully.
Your lips, for example, may look much larger than you expected in the first day or two. This is almost always the swelling talking, not the final result. Try not to judge your results at this early stage - patience is key.
Swelling tends to peak within the first 24 to 48 hours after your filler treatment. During this time, you may notice asymmetry or areas that look overfilled. This is a normal part of the process and rarely reflects the outcome you will see once everything has settled.
During these early days, we recommend:
By day three, most patients notice the initial swelling starting to reduce. Bruising may still be visible and can look quite blue or purple at this stage, but this is perfectly normal and will fade. The texture of the filler also begins to soften and integrate with the surrounding tissue.
Around day five to seven, many patients start to see something closer to their intended result. The filler feels less firm and more natural to the touch. However, the final outcome is not yet fully visible at this point.
The majority of dermal fillers, including hyaluronic acid-based products such as Juvederm and Restylane, take around two to four weeks to fully settle. During this period, the filler absorbs water from the surrounding tissue and integrates with the skin. The result becomes progressively softer, smoother and more natural-looking.
For lip fillers, most patients feel their results have fully settled by the two-week mark. For cheek fillers or under-eye treatment, the process may take a little longer - up to four weeks in some cases. Either way, the end result is typically far more subtle and natural than what you see in the first few days.
Several things influence how quickly your fillers settle:
Some degree of swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness is completely normal in the first week after filler treatment. However, there are some signs that warrant contacting your clinic:
If you have any concerns following treatment at Kat & Co, our team is always available to provide guidance and reassurance.
We recommend booking a review appointment around two to four weeks after your initial filler treatment. At this point, results will have settled sufficiently for us to accurately assess the outcome and, if needed, carry out a small refinement or top-up. Coming in for a review too early, before the two-week mark, means we cannot yet see the true result.
Many patients find that once their fillers have fully settled, they are delighted with the outcome - often more natural-looking and balanced than they expected in those early post-treatment days.
